The Adidas Stan Smith is becoming one of the most popular shoes. Stan Smith is an American tennis player, who was active between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s. Adidas approached him to endorse shoe in 1971. The shoe has a quite simple design with a white leather upper and laces. The doesnt have three stripes like most Adidas trainers but it does have three rows of perforations (or punched ventilation holes) on both sides of each shoe's leather upper in the same pattern that should symbolize the three ordinary stripes. There shoe has mostly stayed the same since the first release but there has been many new colour ways and collabarations.
In 1965, the tennis shoe model was named the "adidas Robert Haillet" after the French tennis professional Robert Haillet, but after Robert retirted Adidas needed to find another tennis player to endorse the trainer and they found Stan Smith!
In 1988, the Adidas Stan Smith had been sold in about 22 million pairs, and the shoe was listed in Guinness World Records. In 1994, the number of pairs had increased to 23.7 million. At the turn of the 21st century, Adidas re-issued a new version of the adidas stan smith – "adidas Stan Smith II". In 2008, a replica of the original adidas stan smith was released in the Adidas Originals line and was named "adidas stan smith 80s".
